The likelihood of ESD (electrostatic discharge) damage to a computer increases when the user is in contact with a surface that is not properly grounded, such as a carpeted floor or a plastic chair. Additionally, when the user is wearing clothing that can build up an electrostatic charge, such as wool, nylon, or polyester, the likelihood of ESD damage is increased.
The most likely cause of ESD damage to a computer is when the computer is not properly grounded, or if the user is not wearing an ESD wrist strap or other protective clothing when handling the computer or its components.
