The subnet mask is important in determining the network address because it is used to define which part of an IP address belongs to the network and which part belongs to the host. The subnet mask is used to separate the network prefix from the host identifier, so that devices on the same network can communicate with each other. The subnet mask is also used to determine which devices are on the same network and which ones are on a different network, thus allowing for efficient routing of data traffic.
