A Layer 2 switch needs an IP address so it can be managed and configured remotely, since Layer 2 switches do not support telnet or console access. It also needs an IP address to support features such as SNMP, which is used for network monitoring and management. Additionally, IP addressing allows a Layer 2 switch to participate in Layer 3 routed networks.
