1. To read an IP address, look at it one octet at a time. An IP address is made up of four octets, each separated by a period. For example, an IP address may be 12.34.56.78
2. Read the first octet (the numbers before the first period). This is the most significant octet and represents the network address portion of the IP address. In the example above, the network address portion is 12.
3. Read the second octet (the numbers between the first and second periods). This octet helps identify the host on the particular network. In the example, the host identification for this address is 34.
4. Read the third and fourth octets. The third and fourth octets are the least significant octets and represent the specific device on a particular network. In the example above, the device is represented by 56 and 78, respectively.
