The layers of a network can be broken down into seven distinct categories
: 1. Application Layer: This is the top layer of the network that provides the user interface for application programs that access the network. Examples include web browsers, email programs, and file transfer programs.
2. Presentation Layer: This layer is responsible for converting data from one format to another so that it can be understood and processed by the application layer.
3. Session Layer: This is the layer that establishes, maintains, and terminates communication sessions between two computers or devices.
4. Transport Layer: This layer is responsible for providing reliable transmission of data between computers or devices. It establishes end–to–end processes, manages flow control, and performs error correction.
5. Network Layer: This is the main routing layer that routes data packets between nodes on different networks. It selects the best path and determines how data should be routed.
6. Data Link Layer: This layer establishes, maintains, and terminates connections between two nodes on the same network. It is responsible for creating and maintaining a logical connection between two devices and performing error correction.
7. Physical Layer: This layer is responsible for transmitting bits over a physical medium. It defines the electrical, mechanical, procedural, and functional requirements for the physical connection.
