Disinformation in cyber security is the intentional spread of false, inaccurate, or misleading information intended to deceive an adversary or mislead the public. It is commonly used to confuse people and cause them to question the truth of facts presented to them. In the context of a cyber–attack, disinformation may be used as part of an effort to distract defenders away from the actual attack, make it more difficult for authorities to attribute the attack to the perpetrator, or discredit efforts to defend against the threat. Disinformation can also be used in the form of “fake news” spread for malicious purposes.
