A network sniffer, also known as a packet sniffer, is a piece of software or hardware designed to intercept data traveling over a network. It can capture and analyze all data passing through a network interface, whether it is intended for the machine being monitored or not. Network sniffers are commonly used to pinpoint problems in computer networks, troubleshoot network applications, and monitor network traffic.
